InCharge Celebrates Carolyn Green: Most Tenured Credit Counselor

If you bump into Carolyn Green at a company function, don’t ask her what she does at InCharge Debt Solutions.

Ask her what she hasn’t done!

Green currently is a team lead for counseling/team lead intake/assistant supervisor, but those are just a few of the bases she’s touched in a 23-year career at InCharge. Some of her other stops include:

  • Customer support department
  • Worked with bankruptcy counseling and client services
  • Customer support, processing documents for creditors
  • Assisting supervisors
  • Credit Counseling
  • Assisting with new hires

“And my next goal is to be part of the training department,” Green said, without stopping to catch her breath. “I think the best thing about this company is all the opportunities you have to learn new areas and advance yourself.”

Her long career in helping people find debt-relief solutions for their financial problems is more than a touch ironic. When she showed up for her first day of training at InCharge Debt Solutions, it would have been easy to ask whether she should be talking about becoming a client, not a credit counselor.

“At that time, I was getting credit card offers in the mail every week and I’d sign up and send it back that same day,” Green said. “I bet I had six or seven cards and was running up bills on all of them. I mean, every time the card company said they would raise my credit limit, I was like ‘Wow! Bring it on!’ “

That’s not exactly what the credit counselor’s handbook recommends, and Green knows the handbook as well as anyone. She stayed in the class, learned the right way to deal with debt – paid off all of her credit cards! — and has spent the last 23 years counseling thousands of credit card users on how to get control of their finances.

“The No. 1 thing I try to do with clients is to sympathize with them, put myself in their situation and help them find a way out,” Green said. “Finances can cause a lot of stress. Look at what happened during Covid. A lot of people lost their jobs and tried to live off their credit cards. That’s just trying to survive. and you can’t fault people for doing that.”

Green is as busy outside of work as she is at work. She likes to travel and just started bowling, though reaching triple digits with her score has been a challenge.

Her favorite thing is spending time with her family. She has been married to her husband, Michael, for 25 years and has three sons, Darius, Daymon and Marquise who added seven grandchildren to the family.

“I love those grandkids,” she said.

She also loves the 23 years she’s spent working at InCharge and what she has learned from it.

“The best thing I learned is that to be successful, you have to be dedicated,” Green said. “You have to love your job, be a team player, be willing to learn new things and always be willing to help out.

“That’s all going to happen if you stay dedicated to the job. I love InCharge and the way we do things here. I hope I’m here until the day I retire.”
